Nous sommes partis en balade je ne sais plus où, dans les Cévennes, je crois. Nous cheminions très lentement sur des petites routes de montagne bordées de prés et de forêts, le soir, nous nous arrêtions dans une auberge, nous mettions la jument à paître, et au matin, dans l’air limpide, nous repartions, ma sœur et moi perchées sur le siège du cocher dans nos salopettes à pattes d’éléphant et nos chemisiers bariolés, mangeant les glaces et chantant à tue-tête les chansons qu’il nous apprenait, Brel, Brassens, lui devant, précédant la jument avec un seau d’eau ou un peu de foin pour la faire avancer, riant avec nous dès qu’elle s’arrêtait. Dans un communiqué, le ministre de la Défense précise avoir « immédiatement ordonné une enquête de commandement afin que soient déterminées dans les plus brefs délais les circonstances d’un événement aussi dramatique ». « On ne sait pas si le militaire a fait un geste criminel mais on n’écarte pas la thèse accidentelle », a déclaré le préfet de l’Aude. Le soldat est actuellement en garde à vue à la gendarmerie de Carcassonne. Quatre enfants figurent parmi les blessés et le pronostic vital est « très engagé » pour l’un d’eux, a déclaré le préfet Bernard Lemaire.
