Il y eut un temps où la lubie de l’automobile avait pris une telle virulence que certains cerveaux méditaient de recouvrir la Seine de béton. Ainsi eût-on circulé commodément en travers de la ville, pour aller comme les autres de nulle part à l’on ne sait où. On s’est contenté de ne distraire qu’une partie des berges, où les amoureux et poètes ne flânaient déjà plus que dans les chansons. On se demande à quel sort les ponts eussent été voués dans ce programme. Sans doute aurait-il fallu les détruire presque tous, sans épargner le Pont-Neuf qui représente un colossal obstacle.

There was a time when the craze for automobiles had become so obsessive that some wise guys considered covering the river Seine with concrete. If so we could have circulated through the city easily, to go from nowhere to who knows where just like everyone else. We settled for only taking over part of the river banks where lovers and poets were already only strolling within songs. We wonder what would have become of the bridges in this scenario. Without a doubt we would have had to destroy almost all of them; even the Pont-Neuf bridge, which represents a huge obstacle, would not have been spared.
